Flood mitigation in Chembani area

Mombasa County, Kisauni Sub County, Mtopanga Ward, Chembani Village

Environmental concerns and natural disasters management (floods, landslides, deforestation etc)

Specific Problem or Need –

Chembani village is one of the biggest villages in Bamburi Kiembeni harboring a prominent snake park owned by LAFARGE (Bamburi Cement), dubbed as Nguu Tatu nature trail. The biggest challenge facing this zone is the overflow of flood water from river Mtopanga which flows through the park and the community. The flood water poses a serious threat to the villagers as it does not only enable reptiles to swim to the village but also, becomes a breeding ground for various disease causing organisms.

Early warning signs and indicators –

  • Increased water-borne diseases in the area such as cholera and bilharzia due to floods
  • Swimming of reptiles in the flood water from Nguu Tatu sanctuary to the community
  • Increased movement of waste into the community by flood water

Rapid Response Proposals –

  • Provide basic information about flood forecasting and early warning, specifically on riverine zones
  • Train villagers on how to handle reptiles that swim from the surrounding animal sanctuary

Likely worst case scenario –

  • Villagers suffering from health hazards due to outbreak of water borne diseases, loss of homes or even loss of lives due to drowning
  • Destruction of infrastructures such as schools, roads and bridges
  • Death due to harm from reptiles such as crocodiles and snakes

Efficient and Effective Interventions –

  • Raising the river bank and installing culverts which will reduce the amount of water from overflowing
  • Enforce proper waste management programs

Partnerships and Collaborations

  • Bamburi cement
  • Extractive Virtual Tours (EVITO)
  • Okoa CBO
  • Coastal clan

Resources required include: culverts, building blocks, cement and labor
Available resources: cleaning equipment

We want to raise Ksh 400,000 for 5 months

Implementation Level of Proposed Solution –

Since it’s the rainy season we will appreciate if it can be immediately implemented before extensive damage occurs
